Monsignor Thomas M. Wells
Thomas Martin
Wells was born in Washington, D.C. March 9, 1944 His family lived in Blessed Sacrament Parish
where he attended the elementary school along with his brother
and three sisters. After
attending St. John’s college High School in Washington, D.C.,
he graduated from Boston College and Christ the King Seminary,
St. Bonaventure, New York. He was ordained to the Catholic Priesthood on February 13, 1971
and was given the title “Monsignor” in 1991.
Monsignor
Wells served in Maryland as Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart,
Bowie, St. Mark, Hyattsville, St. Andrew Apostle, Silver Spring,
and Our Lady of Lourdes, Bethesda.
He was appointed to be Assistant Director of Vocations
for Men and Director of the Permanent Deaconate.
He served as Pastor at St. Mark Parish, Our Lady of
Lourdes Parish, and Mother Seaton Parish, Germantown.
On the night
of June 8, 2000, Monsignor Wells was brutally murdered in
the rectory at Mother Seaton Parish.
His murderer was apprehended and convicted, but was
spared the death penalty at the request of the Wells family
in compliance with Monsignor Wells’
known opposition to capital punishment.
