SAME COLLEGES PULLING MOST OF THE WEIGHT ON MINORITY DEGREES

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The colleges that award the most degrees to minority groups remain fairly consistent, according to the annual analysis of the top 100 degree producers by Black Issues in Higher Education, a bi-weekly publication. Discounting traditionally black institutions, which have the highest rates, the colleges tend to be large, public, and reflecting regional demographics.

The analysis was prepared by Victor Borden of Indiana University and Purdue University. It was based largely on 1994-95 data (in some cases 1995-96 data were available); this is before reversals of affirmative action affected enrollments in Texas and California. Borden also looked at the proportion of African-American faculty at the institutions, finding that the average was only 4 percent.

The top 10 traditionally white universities with the highest totals of baccalaureate degrees conferred on African-Americans were:

  • City University of New York-City College;
  • Temple University (Philadelphia);
  • CUNY-Bernard Baruch College;
  • Wayne State University (Detroit);
  • College of New Rochelle (N.Y.);
  • University of Maryland/-College Park;
  • Georgia State University;
  • CUNY-York College;
  • University of South Carolina/Columbia; and
  • University of Maryland-University College.


The top 10 campuses awarding the highest number of degrees to Hispanics were:

  • Florida International University;
  • University of Texas/El Paso;
  • University of Texas/Austin;
  • University of Texas/Pan American;
  • University of California/Los Angeles;
  • California State University/Los Angeles;
  • University of Texas/San Antonio;
  • San Diego State; and
  • University of California/Berkeley.


The top 10 campuses awarding the highest number of degrees to Asian-Americans are:

  • University of Hawaii/Manoa;
  • University of California/Berkeley;
  • University of California/Los Angeles;
  • University of California/Irvine;
  • San Francisco State;
  • University of Washington;
  • San Jose State University;
  • University of California/Davis; and
  • California State Polytechnic/Pomona.


The top 10 campuses awarding the highest number of degrees to Native American students are:

  • Northeastern State University (Oklahoma);
  • Southeastern Oklahoma State;
  • Northern Arizona University;
  • Oklahoma State University/main campus;
  • Pembroke State University (NC);
  • University of Oklahoma/Norman;
  • University of New Mexico/main campus;
  • University of Central Oklahoma;
  • East Central University (OK); and
  • Arizona State University/main campus.
