What's New?

NEWS FLASH!!!

Thursday, April 2... Dee Dickinson has provided excerpts from her new book that show how technology enhances each of the Howard Gardner "Multiple Intelligences", including... the 8th. Information on the Naturalist Intelligence was prepared exclusively for this class. Use this work as the basis for your questions for next week's (week-long) Asynchronous Discussion on this topic.

Wednesday, Apri 1... Check the Syllabus for link to March 31 Chat with Alfred Bork, Professor Emeritus at University of California-Irvine on "Future Thoughts".

Wednesday, March 25... See the Discussion on the Resource Guide. Check the Syllabus for link to last week's Chat with Dr. Paul Messier on Agile Learning.

Wednesday, March 18... Check the Syllabus for updates (background and readings for Dr. Paul Messier and Dr. Alfred Bork, rescheduling of Dee Dickinson).

Wednesday, March 11... the text of last week's Chat with Anne C. Lewis is now online from the Syllabus listing. The list of coach candidates that the instructors have recruited is available off the home page.

Friday, March 6... selected readings for next Tuesday's guest, Anne C. Lewis, have been posted in the Syllabus. Ms Lewis is author of Capitol Commentary in Kappan Magazine, a documentor for many of the education reform projects, and is a past president of the Education Writers Association.

Tuesday, March 3... log of Chat session on Course Underpinnings... Lev Vygotsky and Scaffolding as the Basis for Coaching is posted in the Syllabus area.

Friday, February 27... check the Updated Projects and Assignments page and the Syllabus for assignments related to our March 3 "Visiting Professor"... Dee Dickinson, President of New Horizons for Learning.

Lessons Learned Curious as to why we lost the first half hour of Dr. Meyer's discussion with the class last Tuesday? The Excite Talk! chat system permits capture of the full dialogue of a chat session, but only AFTER the session has completed. Unfortunately, Dave Keefe's Chat session was accidentally terminated after the first half hour. We managed to recover a few minutes prior to that by copying information from an Excite Java Chat session, and then captured the rest of the session at the end. This contrasts with the Prodigy Chat facility, which will automatically capture all dialogue that occurs after you commence Chat logging.

This experience teaches us to periodically save the Excite sessions at several times during the class, to prevent future data loss.

Also, see the Resource page for a discussion on Image Mapping.

At Last! Dave Keefe has found and fixed the infamous "You can't get there from here" link to the Distributed Learning Page. Here is what was happening... You entered an authentication code (and saved the password) to get into the Lectures / Assignments area. From within that area Dave built a link to another protected area for Distributed learning, which had a different access code. The system would link to the new area, apply its current id/pw combination, fail, then retry, fail again, etc. Solution... link outside the protected area to another page that then links to our protected area... causing the auth window to come up again. Phew!

Friday February 13 - The Syllabus has additional updates, including links to the new Excite facility, which lets us establish a Private Chat room named JHU_CLASS. The syllabus links to a (almost) complete log from last evening's half-hour class chat using the O'Reilly WebBoard software Chat functions operating on a JHU server. Remember the challenges and frustration of this experience... and then contrast that experience with our new Excite Chat area!

February 9... The bio and recent article by the Feb. 10 speaker, Dr. Ronnie Lowenstein are now linked from the Syllabus. The log from a recent Education Chat on Prodigy and the log from a recent Chat on the Hopkins server are now on the website, for those who are not able to make use of the Prodigy software.

February 5... Check the updated Syllabus for additional links to speakers and background content. Note also that Powerpoint presentations / notes for the first two classes are online in the "Lectures" section.

January 27... We have arranged for Prodigy to provide you with six free months of usage of their Prodigy Internet system, which will be used in this class as one example of a commercial Chat service. If you install the Prodigy Internet software, be sure to use the special code... EDCOMP6. This code is only active with the software CD distributed in this class, with support for Windows/95, Windows 3.1, or Macintosh systems.
